Respite Care

Respite care is care provided for a set period of time while the primary carer rests from their regular care duties. When existing care arrangements fail due to a deterioration in the patient’s condition or carer strain or burnout, emergency respite care is frequently required.

Caring for others can be extremely rewarding, but it is also a demanding task that can leave caregivers exhausted and depleted of energy. Many caregivers work 50 hours or more per week in a high-stress environment. Caregivers, both unpaid and paid, require a support system that allows them to take breaks and vacations without abandoning their charge.

In most other jobs, sickness or vacation cover is simple – but for caregivers, the responsibility is enormous. Caregivers must be able to take time off, even if only to attend appointments, fitness classes, and social events, but in order to do so, they must be confident that adequate cover care is in place.

This is where respite care comes into play.

Respite care is temporary care that covers for a regular home caregiver. Respite live-in care provides carers with an important opportunity to rest and recuperate from the business of caring, allowing them to continue to provide a high level of service.

Promotes Relaxation

Your body needs rest to function, but if you fail to get adequate sleep and take breaks to calm your body, you will experience exhaustion and possibly depression. When you rest, your mood may be enhanced, allowing you to take on your caregiving responsibilities with a new outlook.

Increases Social Engagement

It is important for family caregivers to avoid isolation. If you withdraw from social activities you could experience a mental and emotional breakdown. Opting for respite care can help you stay active and give you a break from your caregiving duties.

Provides Assistance and Support

Respite care gives you the help you need when caring for a senior loved one. A professional caregiver could also give you tips to use when he or she is not in the home. This advice can come in handy for family caregivers, especially those who have no experience caring for seniors with chronic illnesses or cognitive impairment.

Using respite care gives you time to go to the doctor and get the testing and screenings you need. Caregivers need to be healthy if they intend to provide high-quality care to their loved ones.

When family caregivers are overworked, they may turn to smoking, drinking, and other bad habits as a way to manage their stress. However, respite care allows caregivers to take breaks and focus on healthier habits such as learning a new language, journaling, joining a local gym, or trying out a new craft.

Respite care allows caregivers to visit with other family members and friends, participate in activities they once enjoyed, and attend support group meetings, which can help them reclaim their identity.

Caregivers and their loved ones often grow tired of each other and need a break from time to time. With respite care, you can explore other pursuits while your loved one interacts with someone other than yourself. Having these breaks can relieve friction that may have been building between seniors and their family caregivers.
